This historical grounding elevates Gangs of Wasseypur Part 1 above standard revenge thrillers. It subtly comments on the feudal system, the exploitation of labor in coal mines, and how political corruption fuels generational violence.
Driven by a singular obsession—to avenge his father Shahid Khan’s murder—Sardar is a bald, gritty force of nature who builds a criminal empire to challenge his rivals. Ramadhir Singh (Tigmanshu Dhulia): gangs of wasseypur part 1
While Part 2 focuses on the explosive feuds between cousins, Gangs of Wasseypur Part 1 is primarily the story of Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpayee). Sardar is not a likable protagonist. He is crude, sexually aggressive, morally ambiguous, and ruthlessly ambitious. He marries Nagma Khatoon (Richa Chadda) but keeps a volatile mistress, Durga (Reema Sen), out of sheer lust and power.
Critics called the film a "" and one of the best Hindi films ever made. The film's frank depiction of violence and its authentic, profane language was also praised for breaking new ground in popular Indian cinema. A review from Eye For Film noted that the film, despite its length, " rarely drags " and balances "action, humour and social commentary" expertly. However, some critics noted that at 160 minutes, its sheer length and sprawling cast of characters could feel excessive and convoluted at times, with one review suggesting that the "lack of economy cripples the film". There are no white suits or slow-motion flower petals. Gangsters here wear stained vests, eat paan, and die in muddy gullies. The violence is sudden, ugly, and matter-of-fact. A shooting happens mid-conversation. A beheading is shown without a heroic background score.
Shahid is killed brutally by Ramadhir’s men. His son, Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpayee), grows up in the gutters of Wasseypur, watching his mother struggle. Sardar is not a hero. He is a force of nature—violent, sexually aggressive, and obsessed with reclaiming his father’s lost honor. Can’t copy the link right now
