The novel is set after the dramatic events of the Great Rift’s opening, a galaxy-spanning tear in reality that has plunged the Imperium into a new dark age. This cataclysmic event has created an opportunity for the forces of Chaos to exploit the ensuing chaos. The Alpha Legion warband the Serpent’s Teeth is among the first of their legion to encounter the Primaris Space Marines—the Imperium's new and improved breed of warriors. This encounter forces the warband to choose between continuing their guerilla tactics or adapting to face this powerful new threat.

Solomon Akurra is the protagonist and the lynchpin of the novel. Introduced by Mike Brooks in the short story "The Brightest and the Best," Akurra is an ambitious, cunning, and surprisingly pragmatic Alpha Legionnaire. Following a deadly battle with Primaris Marines, he becomes the newly appointed Harrowmaster, selected by a rare, unanimous vote of various Alpha Legion warbands.

"The Alpha Legion are devious beyond measure, but deceit is a double-edged sword. As the Indomitus Crusade pushes into the far reaches of the Ultima Segmentum, and Solomon Akurra and his warband the Serpent's Teeth encounter the feared Primaris Marines, the Alpha Legion is faced with a choice—fade into the shadows, or adapt and strike back. Solomon intends to take the title of Harrowmaster and bind together the feuding heads of the hydra that make up his Legion, but his allies are disparate and unproven, and his enemies march with the might of the Imperium at their back. Much is not as it seems..."

The story follows Solomon Akurra, a Harrowmaster of the Alpha Legion, who seeks to unite a splintered warband and bring them under his control, navigating the complex politics, betrayals, and infighting typical of the Chaos Space Marines [1].
