The success of the film rests entirely on Santiago Segura's performance. He manages to make a truly horrible person watchable. There is a bizarre, pathetic charm to Torrente. We don't root for him to succeed in being a hero, but we are fascinated by his delusions of grandeur. He is a walking satire of the "tough guy" cop trope (think Dirty Harry or Lethal Weapon ), but stripped of all competence and morality.
